A quick round up of some essential netbook applications to install on your ultra portable. These light weight handy little apps will help you get the most from a compact Windows environment. Inspired by BBC Click.

  • Rocketdock has been a popular recommendation here at SammyNetbook.com right from the early days of the forum. RocketDock is a smoothly animated, alpha blended fully customisable application launcher. It provides a nice clean interface to drop shortcuts on for easy access and organisation.
  • 360 Desktop: 360desktop is a free application that transforms Windows into a 360° workspace, plus an online environment for creating interactive 360° wallpaper, with a gallery and a widget platform, for sharing your favorite 360’s with the rest of the Internet. This is ideal for working with systems that are limited in desktop space.
  • Little Fox customises your firefox install to ensure it it optimised for use on the smaller netbook screen. For further information check out the forum threads see here and here
  • Launchy is a free utility for both Windows and Linux. It is designed to help you forget about your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager. Launchy indexes the programs in your start menu and can launch your documents, project files, folders, and bookmarks with just a few keystrokes!
  • PortableApps is a set of free applications that you can run from a USB key. Allows you to take your bookmarks, settings, email and more with you on any Windows computer. All without leaving any personal data behind.

I knew someone would spot that, I didn’t think it would be the first person to reply though. So busted! I sent them a note on Twitter regarding the forum’s app lists. Would be nice if they picked it up and gave a mention on the Beeb site :D!

Jex, could do with adding Stardock’s Fences to the list as on the NC10 it’s a great freebie app.

I want to take this one one step further. I´ve just installed Jolicloud as an OS (some version of Linux) and yeah baby… now it´s much faster.
