Netbook vs Tablet

I recently bought my first tablet, in the end I didn’t go for the Galaxy Tab, but instead picked up the Google Nexus 7 made by ASUS.

I just wanted to take the opportunity to share a few thoughts on where the tablet fits in and what effect that has had on my netbook usage.

Day to day Tablet Use

One of the reasons I wanted to go for a cheaper tablet over one of the more expensive premium models is because I wondered just how much I would use it. I am happy to pay £150 for something that will sit in my living room and provide quick instance access to the net, but £500 always seemed excessive given that it won’t provide any new functionality, everything I do on my tablet I can do on my Samsung NC10 netbook.

After two weeks of tablet ownership I think my prediction wasn’t too far off the mark. The Nexus 7 spends most of its time on the coffee table and has proven invaluable during the London 2012 Olympic games. Finding out the schedule of looking up the progress of competitors is only a few swipes away.

What surprised me is that I am really getting into the tablets eReader and news feed capabilities and the Nexus 7 is fast becoming my entertainment of choice on my daily commute to work. I’ve used it to read work documents, keep up to date on RSS feeds and have started to explore the free books on Amazon’s Kindle platform.

I think this is largely due to the 7″ form factor which is easy to grip and easy to hold for long periods.

So where does the Netbook come in?

To be frank the NC10 has definitely taken a hit when it comes to usage, whereas before I would use it daily, it now only comes into use once or twice a week. There are still things I prefer to do on my netbook (for example working on!), and there are some things that I can only do on the netbook (professional work).

I think the interesting question is whether I would replace my NC10 if it finally gave up on me (it’s getting on a bit now!), and it’s a hard one to answer. I think I would have to have a Windows based portable computer, but I might go for something with a bigger screen. The tablet would really cover the casual browsing and if I just need something for working on then perhaps an Ultrabook might be the way to go.

If you want to find our more head over to my Nexus 7 community site, and feel free to drop by the forum if you have any questions.

I recently bought an N7 and have to say it’s been my best buy ever, given the choice now I can’t see myself buying another laptop.
