It has been a few months since the last post here at SammyNetbook so I thought it was about time we gave you an update on what’s happening in Sammy World!

The reality is that there has been no movement from Samsung with respect to Netbooks, and actually very little from other manufacturers too. Some have speculated that Samsung have given up on evolving the netbook line (see the forum thread here), but I wonder if that might be a little premature.

There is still plenty of interest in this site with visitor numbers remaining steady so there still seems to be a place for low cost ultra portable computers. I am not convinced that anything else has really filled the niche, tablets have their limitations, ultrabooks are light and powerful – but more expensive.

Whilst we wait to see what happens next to netbooks, let’s have a quick update on what else has been going on in the world of Samsung Ultra Portables?

Samsung 2012 Tablet News

Announced at the 2012 CES, the new tablet for 2012 is an update to the original 7″ version of the Galaxy Tab. Samsung highlights the following features on the Galaxy Tab 7.7:

  • World’s thinnest 4G LTE tablet at 7.9mm thin and only 12 oz. for ultimate portability
  • First tablet in the U.S with a 7.7″ Super AMOLED Plus display
  • Peel Smart Remote to find, watch and discover favourite TV shows
  • SAFE™ certified with features that deliver enterprise-friendly capabilities
  • Read more here.

2012 may well be the year that I take the plunge and buy a tablet, I decided to wait for a couple of evolutions just to see the hardware settle. To be honest the only thing that really matters to me is that the tablet is light and slim, with plenty of storage. After that a basic camera would be useful for Skype but I won’t be using it to replace my camera!

Hopefully we’ll see more exciting updates coming through later in the year, the first of which is likely to be the Android 4.0 powered Galaxy Tab 2.

Samsung Notebook News

Whilst there have been no new 2012 netbooks from Samsung, they have not been sitting still in the wider notebook market.

Series 9

Competing in the premium high performance market place, the second generation Series 9 notebook was announced at this years CES exhibition.

Selling this model, Samsung have announced:

  • The world’s thinnest and most compact 15” premium notebook
  • Vivid 15” display fitted into a stylish 14” chassis.
  • Flat 14.9mm (0.58”) thin design weighs just 1.59kg (3.5lbs)
  • Second generation Intel® Core™ i5 processor
  • Up to 8GB memory
  • 128GB SSD
  • The 13” model measures only 12.9mm (0.5”) and weighs just 1.16kg (2.6lbs).

Series 5

Ultrabooks are all the rage right now, if you are unfamilar with the concept, this is an Intel brand and manufacturers must conform to certain standards to badge their notebooks up as an Ultrabook.

These high end ultra portable notebooks are slim, light with high performance and longer battery life.  And whilst they retail in a price bracket above our humble netbook, they are far more economical than high end laptops such as the Series 9 models or MacBook Air.

Two models were announced at this year’s CES:

If you were a netbook user who was always a little disappointed by the performance and doesn’t mind spending a little more, these are worth keeping an eye on.

Samsung Phone News

Continuing Samsung’s challenge to Apple‘s smart phone domination, they have also got a range of new phones hitting the shops this year.  With updates to the flag ship models, and targeting the budget Android market it looks like Samsung will continue as the strongest challenger.

The following models were announced at the CES show:

  • Galaxy S Blaze
  • Galaxy Attain
  • Exhilarate
  • Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD

And rumours of an update to the flag ship Galaxy S II are already starting to surface, I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this very soon.  This update should hit the shops some time this year.
